Kamal Nuru
President, Levels Barbershop, Antique Barber, Barber World TV,
Kamal Nuru lives and breathes the essence of the barber industry. With his passion for it pouring out of his fingertips, he has built a multitude of brands inspired by his industry that stays on top of consumers’ minds. He loves what he does and with a focus on giving back to the community he is a popular character not only to his clientele but the community as a whole.
Kamal chose his career very early in life and perhaps just by chance. At the early age of 16 he began cutting his friends and family’s hair and it wasn’t long until a veteran in the neighborhood discovered his talent and brought him on as an apprentice. After that there was no turning back. Kamal knew he wanted his own shop and merely a few years later he opened his flagship store on 125th street which is still stands as the number one location for Levels chain of six barbershops around the city.
Having an interest in all things antique, Kamal has built his barbershops with a classic, old school atmosphere, equipment and details. The shops’ interiors have become so renowned that they have been used as backdrops for many TV shows such as HBO’s documentary “Cutting Edge”, TV One’s “Sharp Talk”, BET’s Top 25 Countdown, ESPN 2’s Cuttin’ Up and MTV’s Sucka Free Sundays just to name a few.
Kamal has evolved the antique concept into a clothing and product line under The Antique Barber brand that sells well online and in his desire to further his own brand he has also established a web-based TV channel called Barber World TV which covers newsworthy subjects for the industry as well as the popular annual New York City Barber Battle every fall.
